Interview with Joone at AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2006, Las Vegas
Joone Interview
Silicon Slave had the opportunity to interview adult film director
Joone of Digital Playground at the 2006 AVN show in Las Vegas,
Nevada. Joone has directed several acclaimed adult DVD titles
including Pirates, Virtual Sex with Teagan Presley, and Island Fever 3. Joone took some time out of his busy schedule to answer the following questions for our Silicon Slave readers: Silicon Slave: Our
readers would be very interested to know about your education and the
path that you took that lead you into directing the industry’s
most premiere DVDs.
Joone: I went to USC Film School.
While I was going to USC I was also working at Philips Interactive
Media doing CDI which some people might remember as the first
multimedia station before computers, before CD-ROMs. So I got an
education on interactivity early, early on. Graduated, was
directing music videos and commercials, doing a lot of fashion
photography. The whole CD-ROM thing started happening and I
wanted to start doing it but I didn’t have a rich uncle. So
I thought, “Hmmm, how can I make a lot of money really
quick?” I thought, “Hey, I’ll do the
interactive sex. That’s kind of cool and its new
technology; nobody’s ever done it so I’ll do
that.”
So I started Digital Playground and started making interactive sex
titles… virtual sex. In about ’97 the DVD was coming
out and I felt that was the future so I bet the entire company on
DVD. I took my interactive titles and started putting them onto
DVD. Now that we had a medium that was a higher quality than VHS
I was like, “OK we can start making movies.” So we
slowly started doing that. At the same time I wanted to be able
to have really good talent as stars. I started signing on girls
as contract girls so that I could make a movie with a larger budget,
following the old Hollywood model where you have a star that a lot of
people want to watch. I can make a movie, spend more money on it,
and know that there is a little bit of an insurance policy that it will
sell a little bit more than if you had somebody with no name.
Silicon Slave: So based
on the experience that you had doing the commercials and the DVDs have
you found an aspect of it that appeals to you more, such as the
technical vs the artistic?
Joone: I’ll tell
you something, to me the last place you can do independent filmmaking
is in Adult. That’s what I find appealing. I started
Digital Playground because I wanted to make movies. I created a
studio; we have our distribution, everything we need in order to make
movies, movies we want to make. And really Adult is the last the
last place that you can do independent filmmaking. You can get a
budget, you can make whatever movie you want, and it just has to have
sex in it. I look at it as, “Hey, sex is like a commercial
that pays for the movie.” Not that I take the sex and
discount it. I make it a complete product. In a way you can
be an artist and express yourself and create things that you like and
not be caught up in the Hollywood system where you’re not going
to be able to make the movies or you have to make movies by
committee.
Silicon Slave: You’re not going to have some accountant telling you that it’s not a good film to make.
Joone: Right.
Silicon Slave: Given that
you’ve done this for awhile, how do you keep things interesting
for yourself? How do you keep yourself challenged and the process
fun and interesting?
Joone: As an artist
it’s more about ideas. You do one thing, then you’re
like, “OK, I did that, now I want to do this.” The
challenge is in the art, in the creation. Technology is awesome
because it’s a tool that helps you express those ideas in
different ways. We live in an age where every six months new
stuff is coming out. It’s always challenging to think about
how I can use that tool to do what I want to do, take what’s in
my head and bring it out. So we’re living in an age where
anything is possible with digital technology and computers. Silicon Slave: For a movie like Pirates,
what kind of planning goes into a film like that? For example, do
you storyboard it out, or use project management software to plan it
out? Our audience would like to know what goes into such a big
production.
Joone: We use all the
tools to make it as easy of a production as possible. The script
is written on the computer. I always hate printing out on paper
because I think it’s such a waste. Just to be able to send
files over and have people make comments and go back and forth at the
script level and then moving onto doing storyboards and having those
all being done digitally. To budgeting, production scheduling -
everything being done on the computer makes it more efficient.
You don’t need as many people to do the same job.
That’s the main thing with digital technology; it allows us to
streamline the process and make last-minute changes quicker.
Silicon Slave: How long
did it take to make Pirates from the time you started writing the
script to the point where you were ready to master?
Joone: The hardest part
of Pirates was finding the boat. The actual scripting process to
final delivery was nine months. It was pretty quick. We had
17 shooting days… in an industry where you do a movie in two
days! We shot half of it in Los Angeles and half of it in
Florida. It was a big production.
Silicon Slave: As
you’re shooting each picture, is there anything going through
your mind to ensure the film has broad appeal to both sexes? Are
there any specific details that you pay special attention to?
Joone: What we try to do
is stay true to the characters in the story. We create characters
that appeal to both sexes without sex. Then during sex it’s
just another level. The challenge is always that when the sex
starts we don’t leave our character and suddenly the sex is
totally different. Our whole thing is that character always stays
in character during sex as well. That’s the main the
thing. If you just focus on being true to the character in the
story then I think the audience feels the honesty of the story. Silicon Slave: Based on what you’ve seen at the 2006 AVN show,
what are your thoughts on the state of the industry and where you see
things going? Any big changes you see coming down the road in the
next 3-5 years?
Joone: I think the
biggest change is that physical media is going to be slowly phased
out. I think more and more people are going to get their adult
entertainment through broadband, cable…download. I also
see that HD is going to be the next step. That won’t be
replaced by electronic delivery just because of the sheer bandwidth it
needs. I think for standard definition delivery, DVD is going to
slowly go down. HD will take its place, but a lot of people are
going to get their content through broadband.
Silicon Slave: Especially with technologies like Wi-FI Max coming out.
Joone: Yes.
Silicon Slave: With all
the stars that you’ve worked with, is there one that has become a
favorite or that you really enjoyed working with?
Joone: You know, I love
them all. They all bring something different to the table.
From Jesse to Janine to Carmen. Everybody was just amazing.
For me it was the first time working with Janine at the story
level. She approached it differently than most people do, more
traditional actress. That was refreshing. It’s hard
to say one is better than the other because they all have such
different ways that they approach their craft. I think any of the
girls that are in Pirates are one of my favorites… that’s
why they’re in there! Silicon Slave: If we have
visitors to our website that are not familiar with your works, is there
a particular title that you directed that you would like recommend as
best representative of your work?
Silicon Slave: Any final thoughts for our readers?
Joone: Keep watching. I always love to hear comments, so if you send an email to info@digitalplayground.com with comments you can be sure that I will read it. We do take it into consideration.
Silicon Slave: Joone, thank-you very much!
Joone: Thank-you!
