Robby D. Interview in Las Vegas

Interview with Robby D. at AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2005, Las Vegas

Interview with Robby D. Do you like Gonzo porn?  Are you a big fan of Digital Playground – Jack’s Playground series or perhaps have a taste for Jack’s Teen America?  If so then you probably have heard of Robby D.  Robby D. is the director and creative genius behind these series.  Your good Doctor Phreakenstein happened to line up an interview to help shed some light on what makes this filming phenom tick.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  What was the inspiration behind Montel (comic dildo character seen in Jack’s Playground series)?

Robby D.:  The inspiration for Montel was an accident.  My girlfriend Celeste and I went and bought some blow-up dolls that you buy for $10 at toy stores.  We got a boy and a girl and cut-out eyes for different expressions.  We wanted to take them out and create a film about an agent and a girl that wants to become an actress and this is all in Jack’s Playground 1.  In one of the scenes they are driving around Hollywood with a map of the stars and he had to fuck her and she needs to suck his dick in order to get a part in a movie.  So we stopped by a toy store to buy a dildo.  We thought it would be fucking hilarious if a white guy had a big black fucking asshole dick.  So we spot a black dildo and we are sitting in the parking lot ready to drive away and it had a suction cup, so we snap it to the window and start driving down the street and it starts flopping around in front of us.  I think Celeste just kind of made a joke about it talking as we were driving and it just took off from there.

Robby D.: "We stick the dildo to the car window and start driving around!"

Dr. Phreakenstein:  I guess Montel evolved over time.  Do you remember what brands of make of toys were used?

Robby D.:  First it was, if I am not mistaken a Hustler® realistic one – not really too realistic it had a really off brown shade, kind of bland, not really glossy or nothing.  Now the newer one that is really really black is called the Doc Johnson Realistic® Cock (comes in white and black).  It looks real but I don’t look at a lot of black dicks so I don’t really know.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  So what type of roll do you see sex toys playing in the adult film segment?

Robby D.:  In Jack’s Playground we try and create characters with them.  We have three, one is like a white one, one is an uncircumcised one, and one is a really big fucking thing.  We had these characters, but in Jack’s Teen America, I used toys in just about every scene.  I used all the types of toys, anal beads, all the types of glass toys, any little novelty type toys, to really high-end extreme S&M bondage type toys.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  How did that film do for you?

Robby D.:  Amazing.  Biggest seller I think we have had since Island Fever.  The response to things like that, anal beads and butt plugs is off the hook it is amazing.  It is really important.

Robby D.: "It was the biggest seller we have had since 'Island Fever'!"

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Do you see coming out with your own line of toys?

Robby D.:  Me?  I don’t really know anything about that.  I wouldn’t have any idea.  Sure that would be cool and all.  Some lines are really stupid and some lines are really cool.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  How about the future of toys, do you see any big trends?

Robby D.:  No, not any big trends. You do see that company Phallix® coming out with glass toys.  I have never used one but I see people going towards that high-end toy.  Then I see people like myself that go with a big basic black rubber butt plugs.  Toys are just like video cameras, just another tool to get the job done.  Why are toys for the guys, the gay lines, so much bigger then the toys for the girls?  You go to a gay toy store and they are all fucking giant.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Well the ass is like a muscle and the more you stretch it, the larger the butt plugs you’ll eventually need.  Some of these guys won’t be able to shit straight by the time they are 60.  Also, not all the gay guys out there are nice little buff boys, some of them have asses that have their own zip codes.

Dr. Phreakenstein: Will we ever see you combining Extreme Sports with porn?

Robby D.: I got my start with Vivid® doing action sport sex for four years.  Pretty soon you run out of things and you are like action sports fucking ping pong.  Chicks with big tits getting fucked on a ping pong table.  I did all the dirt biking, snowboarding stuff and we got sponsor like Fox® and everybody.  It was really cool though.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  So how did you move from that (Extreme Sports) to the adult market?

Robby D.:  I just moved from that to more sexually oriented projects, into more features, and from there over here to Digital.  Industry is a lot more sexual now as are the consumers.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  On the direction side of things do you find yourself more artistic or technical?

Robby D.:  Definitely technician.  I went to the UCLA cinematography school.  My girlfriend is really creative.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  So does she help you out on the sets.  Maybe help give a female perspective?

Robby D.:  She thinks like a guy so doesn’t believe in the female perspective.  Most girls I know don’t want to see a water fall and flowers and such.  They want to see a big fucking dick in some girl’s ass.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  You’ve done stills and you do videos - do you have a preference?

Robby D.:  I go back and forth, I do it all.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  How about the post-production work like photoshopping?

Robby D.:  We outsource that.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Now that HD is becoming more of a popular format, do you see any challenges with this new format?

Robby D.:  The only challenges are trying to adhere to a format that everyone can agree with and right now everybody is being forced into the HD arena and whether you want to or not you have to now, it really sucks.  I figure as a creator/director that I should be able to use whatever I feel like as it is a tool like a butt plug or whatever.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Of all the films do you have a current favorite?

Robby D.:  Beat the Devil and I love the Teen Americas and stuff like that. I get really horny. Beat the Devil allowed for some really cool cinematography and use of an aggressive camera.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Do you do any blue or green screen work?

Robby D.:  Yeah, some of the standard def (definition) formats don’t key out well.  The new HD keys out much better.

Robby D.: "This film allowed for some really cool cinematography"

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Some of the tools and software to support this are getting much better.  No halos and all that.

Robby D.: Absolutely, no ghosting – I did that when I was over at other companies.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  One of the big things that they were talking about over at InterNext was planning your shots.  How much planning do you do?

Robby D.:  Depends on whether you are talking about a Gonzo or a feature.  My features are all really story boarded, like some of them are 20 pages.  In my opinion, in order to make a product look good, when you are trying to make it look like you are winging it takes a lot of planning.  Definitely a lot of planning, I take a lot of notes.  Just scribbles, it doesn’t make sense to anyone else.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Was there a role model or favorite mentor that you really liked and wanted to do what he was doing, that kind of got you into this?

Robby D.:  There are people that do original art work and box design and then there are people that come straight out and do the exact same fucking box.  They even tell me all the time “Robby we are going to steal everything you do right now” and they do it.  The there are other guys that utilize what someone did as inspiration and open the door for them and they see this toy and this toy and then they go wow okay I am going to incorporate toys from there and it grows from there.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Anyone in particular inspire you?

Robby D.:  Yeah Butt Man, Stagliano – but I think he inspired everybody.  That’s the only guy I say who ever inspired me.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Now that you are working for a female run business is there anything different or good about it?

Robby D.:  Yeah, my boss is better looking then your boss.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Have you seen much of an impact from foreign talent?

Robby D.:  I guess that is what they want to see over there.  All American girls just sell well like there is not tomorrow.  Just look at girls like Jesse Jane and Devon.  A lot of companies, I feel personally in my opinion lack in the creative department, lack high production values and any good conceptual ideas so they go over to Prague and shoot all the hot girls because they can’t seem to make it happen here.  I don’t have to play that game, I stay here and I make it happen.

Dr. Phreakenstein:  Are you coming out with anything new that we should be watching for?

Robby D.:  We are always coming out with new stuff like Jack’s Playground and Teen America.  Check them out.

Dr. Phreakenstein: Robby D., thank you very much for your time today!

Robby D.:  Thank you!
